They can be tweaked, but compared to expensive sound banks and models, like SampleModeling and similar, there is simply no comparison. Some technical skills are required though to have it all run smoothly and the sound banks which come with it are not great. It is a very good instrument, and I would highlight "instrument", in the sense that it does require practise to get good, but it does reward a musician with good expressivity.

So, all in all, if you buy an EWI USB, it comes with a personalized software that is rather limited but does the basic job you are requiring.Good deal, but it is an instrument in its own right, so it requires practise and specific tecnique. There is also the possibility to change the sound samples in Aria to something else that you like but I've never tried. It's just difficult to configure specifically for an EWI. Technically, the EWI USB is simply a MIDI controller and lots of MIDI software will somehow work. Others may have better answers on that one. Still, it's kind of interesting to play string instruments with the fingering of a flute, and the synthetic sounds are all right.Īs for other software, I'm absolutely not into music production on computers and my efforts to find some other MIDI software that's relatively cheap (like, not the price of an EWI again) have not been so successful. If I were to want something that really sounds like a saxophone, I wouldn't be satisfied with those. I agree with the reviewer and I'm not impressed with the "natural" sounds it comes with. But then I never understood the average wind controller player's obsession with "fat synth" type sounds since to my ears they always sounded like ass anyhow. Curiously the synthetic sounds are HUGE compared to the accoustic ones, indicating IMHO they spent more time on the sounds that don't sound like anything REAL than they did the ones that are supposed to be normal instruments. It's easy to setup in Windows and you indeed just need to plug in headphones to the computer. I would want to play through a standard windows laptop running whatever software would work well with the instrument. It's Aria Player with sounds from Garritan. The EWI USB comes with its own software by default. Is there a good way to get away from the stock sounds and find something more unique that doesn't try to emulate typical instruments? Thank you so much for reading and for your input!Įdit: Bonus question: What does the sound library look like? I read that you could apply almost any sound via other programs. Would the USB be a good candidate for that type of usage? If so, what will I need in terms of software to fit my needs? I'm looking for something that I can play without disturbing other people around me (plug into laptop and use headphones?) and something I could use to sit down and jam with some friends (typical rock instrumentation, so projection is preferred. I know next to nothing about software, so any tips regarding that would be a huge help. Some background: I'm a woodwind player so I am familiar with the sound production and fingerings of the EWI. I'm very curious about the Akai EWI USB and wanted to get some more info on it before considering purchasing one.
