They can be tweaked, but compared to expensive sound banks and models, like SampleModeling and similar, there is simply no comparison. Some technical skills are required though to have it all run smoothly and the sound banks which come with it are not great. It is a very good instrument, and I would highlight "instrument", in the sense that it does require practise to get good, but it does reward a musician with good expressivity.

So, all in all, if you buy an EWI USB, it comes with a personalized software that is rather limited but does the basic job you are requiring.Good deal, but it is an instrument in its own right, so it requires practise and specific tecnique. There is also the possibility to change the sound samples in Aria to something else that you like but I've never tried. It's just difficult to configure specifically for an EWI. Technically, the EWI USB is simply a MIDI controller and lots of MIDI software will somehow work. Others may have better answers on that one. Curiously the synthetic sounds are HUGE compared to the accoustic ones, indicating IMHO they spent more time on the sounds that don't sound like anything REAL than they did the ones that are supposed to be normal instruments. In terms of samples used in playback most of them are quite acceptable, though the synthetic 'ring' present in most synthesizers are still quite noticeable on the woodwind and brass patches. Here is a review on a fan EWI website that resumes what I couldn't about the default software. The instrument bank and the sounds that comes with the default software are doing the job but they could be better. You can also use any device recognized as an "audio output" by Windows. You will need an amplifier that can accept an audio jack input if you want something louder. Otherwise the sound comes from whatever speakers you have plugged into the computer.

It's easy to setup in Windows and you indeed just need to plug in headphones to the computer. I would want to play through a standard windows laptop running whatever software would work well with the instrument. It's Aria Player with sounds from Garritan. The EWI USB comes with its own software by default. Is there a good way to get away from the stock sounds and find something more unique that doesn't try to emulate typical instruments?
